Department of Printing Science Technology

The department has been growing steadily in response to a growing demand for trained Printers, Publishers and Packaging professionals in the East and Central African region.
The Printing course has established itself as a popular entry route into the printing and graphic communications industries. It provides a comprehensive practical grounding in all aspects of prepress, press preparations, print and post printing processes. The course also looks closely at digital media production. The Printing courses will prepare the learners for the exciting, diverse and technically advancing Print industry. The course focuses on both existing and new technology plus skills and knowledge used throughout the production of printed materials. The learners will consolidate their basic skills and develop new skills in the handling, analysis and evaluation of materials and machine technology. The Postgraduate Diploma in Production Management focuses specifically on issues of strategic management within the context of today’s technological and economic drivers.
Digital Surface Design course provides an opportunity to explore the application of computer-aided design and digital imaging within the field of surface pattern and surface print. It has been designed to enable art and design graduates and creative practitioners to develop knowledge and skills to use computer- aided software and digital imaging and colour manipulation techniques in the development of design ideas and to render these as printed samples.
Packaging is a science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution. The course will involve the process of design evaluation and production of packages for consumption.  
Publishing is a multi disciplinary area which involves the process sourcing for information and preparing the same for public consumption using the most suitable and affordable means. The study will include: Publishing Environments which is an overview of the Publishing industry, its structure and sectors and the functional aspects such as commissioning, editorial, production, marketing, sales and distribution. The Magazine Production and Publishing explores development in magazine production and the impact of digital media on the production process. It also explores developments in new media products and alternative channels of distribution of content. The Publishing course provides employment opportunities for people who enjoy working in a lively, creative and intellectually challenging media environment. The course recognises the need to focus upon the specialised knowledge and skills required across a range of functions within magazine publishing. It is also designed to develop the intellectual skills which are needed to apply theory to practice in the analysis and evaluation of the role that magazines play in media and communication and within society and culture. The course prepares graduates and industry professionals to take a lead in publishing operations. They will gain specialist knowledge and skills required for the field of publishing.

Higher Diploma in Printing Technology
Intake: September
Duration: 2 years – (2 modules)
Qualifications: Diploma in Printing Technology or its equivalent.
Fees: Ksh 18 100/= per module. Exam fee Ksh 6 000/= per module

Diploma in Printing Technology (Regular)
Intake: January
Duration: 3 years – (9 terms)
Qualifications: K.C.S.E Mean Grade C+ including C plain in English, Maths & a Science subject.
Fees: Ksh 4 990/= per term.
Exams: Kenya National Examination Council.

Diploma in Printing and Packaging
Intake: May
Duration: 8 terms
Qualifications: K.C.S.E Mean Grade C+ including C- in English, Maths & a Science subject or a certificate in Machine printing, print finishing or Print Origination.
Fees: Ksh 10 100/= per term. Stage exam fee Ksh 3 000/= Final exam Ksh 5 000/=

Advanced Certificate in Print Origination
Intake: September
Duration: 1 year – 3 terms
Qualifications: K.C.S.E Mean Grade D+ including D+ in English, Maths & Sciences.
Fees: Ksh 8 100/= per term. Exam fees Ksh 4 000/=

Advanced Certificate in Machine Printing
Intake: January
Duration: 1 year – 3 terms
Qualifications: K.C.S.E Mean Grade D+.
Fees: Ksh 8 100/= per term. Exam fees Ksh 4 000/=

Advanced Certificate in Print Finishing
Intake: May
Duration: 1 year – 3 terms
Qualifications: K.C.S.E Mean Grade D+ or people working in libraries and binderies.
Fees: Ksh 8 100/= per term. Exam fees Ksh 4 000/=

Book repair maintenance
Intake: December
Duration: 4 weeks
Qualifications:
