Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is rapidly changing the world in all its facets and it is an area one ignores at his/her own peril. With every one talking of outsourcing, downsizing, automation and reengineering, the whole world of business and industrial environment being transformed completely under the application of integrated ICT systems and networks. This integration is mainly driven by the increase
in the productivity, efficiency and quality of business services and/or industrial products delivered. To be competitive in the global market place businesses and industry are demanding increasingly personnel with relevant ICT skills. The Kenya Polytechnic University College has positioned itself to be a world class trainer in technological area, releasing graduates who are be able to use, manage, maintain and develop integrated
ICT systems to the industry.
Background
POLYICT as a support/service centre was establish in 2004 (with collaboration from the Belgium government through VVOB) to catapult the Kenya Polytechnic University into the modern technological arena through adoption of ICT.With the ongoing changes taking place within the institution as a result of transition to Degree awarding institution, POLYICT is also undergoing a metamorphosis to ensure
that it remains the driving force in the institution’s transformation. This has resulted in reviewed vision and mission, and innovative initiatives that are shall guarantee development and expansion of opportunities for technological education for learners and staff of the University College. The KPUC, intend to improve the
quality of life through utilization of ICT structures and services in teaching and learning and there fore play our part in the fulfillment of vision 2030.
The centre is mandated, among others, to:

  • Offer support to both management, administrative and academic schools/departments within the institution to ensure that data flows efficiently and machines run reliably. This is achieved through the provision of centralized ICT services- internet, maintenance, data storage, network infrastructure installation and maintenance, refurbishment of computer labs.
  • Supervise the procurement of all central, general and generic ITC systems, equipment
    and services.
  • Provide high quality ICT services for educational, research, commercial, and cultural- social
    activities.
  • Play a leading role in the development and expansion of opportunities for technological
    education for the learners and the staff of the University College through ICTs;
  • Facilitate the development and operation of a polytechnic providing appropriate and accessible
    academic and other programmes, courses of study, educational products and research activity such as the University Council considers necessary for the attainment of the foregoing within Kenya and elsewhere.
  • Training of users in the use of the network and the ICT services offered on it.
  • Development of ICT strategies, policies and procedures.
  • Incorporation of ICT content in all relevant curricula though syllabus review and Intergration
    of ICT in teaching and learning.

POLYICT centre, among other activities, organizes curricula reviews which incorporate ICT components in all curricula delivered in the Kenya Polytechnic. With the support of the Kenya Polytechnic University College management and VVOB, the department facilitated all targeted departments for workshops to undertake the review of computer application syllabus and also infuse ICT in other subjects taught in the respective departments. This ensures that a Kenya Polytechnic student is comfortable in utilizing ICT for his/her studies at the end of first year of study at the institution. For the second year of study, the syllabus focuses on the applications which are relevant to the specific area of specialization. In the third year, the learners are expected to utilize the skill acquired for research and trade project implementations.
