| DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY(DEST) |
|
The Department produces scientists with vigorous, interdisciplinary training in environmental science. It is an expression that encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines, brought together to understand and manage the natural environment and the interactions among physical, chemical and biological components. Environmental science provides an integrated, quantitative and interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental systems. Delivery of environmental science training is through the work o an individual scientist or small team drawing on the peer-reviewed, published work of many other scientists. It describes the environment, interprets the impact of human actions (anthropogenic effects) on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and develops strategies for restoring ecosystems, and includes issues such as climate change, conservation biodiversity, water quality, grand water contamination, use of natural resources, waste management, sustainable development, disaster reduction, air pollution and noise pollution. Teams of professionals work together to produce environmental impact statements. There are courses in environmental chemistry, geosciences, ecology, environmental microbiology, environmental biology, environmental pollution among others. Graduates are employed in governmental departments and NGOs. With the many factors affecting the environment today, the demand for people with specific skills in this area is expanding at a high rate. Proposed Courses
